Earn More Per Hour: The Moves Experienced Drivers Make
By DriverStart Team · July 28, 2026 · 5 min read
New drivers grind. Experienced drivers grind smart. The gap between them is a set of learnable moves — when to drive, where to sit, what to decline, and what to stop spending. Filter the grid by category:
Dinner: 5–9pm
Highest restaurant volume daily. Fri/Sat are the peak of peaks.
Lunch: 11–1:30pm
Big for office areas Mon–Thu. Slower in residential markets.
Late night: Thu–Sat 9pm–1am
Bars closing, nightlife, college towns. Fewer drivers, higher tips.
Sunday: noon–8pm
Surprisingly strong — football, family dinners, grocery runs.
Bad weather windows
Rain and snow spike order volume 30–60%. Demand outlook on /earnings.
Sit near restaurants, not at home
Wait time drops when you're already in the food district. Sitting in your driveway means every order requires a drive to pickup.
Watch the peak-pay map
DoorDash and Uber highlight surge zones in real time. Move TO them — most drivers ignore the map.
Position before the rush
Be in the dinner zone at 4:45pm, not 5:15pm. The first hour has the lowest competition.
Events and stadiums
Order volume in surrounding 5 miles spikes 90 min before start and immediately after.
Set a per-mile floor
$1.25/mile minimum, some markets $1.50. Acceptance rate matters less than hourly.
Decline stacked bad orders
If the second order in a bundle goes to a known low-tip area, decline both.
Watch the tip portion
DoorDash shows guaranteed pay + tip. If the tip is $0, customers rarely tip after delivery either.
Know your low-tip zones
Within 2–3 weeks you'll learn which neighborhoods don't tip. Decline orders going there unless platform pay alone is enough.
Track mileage day one
67¢/mile in deductions. Stride/Everlance set up before your first dash. See /taxes.
Use a gas-back app
Upside (GetUpside) gives 15–30¢/gal cash back at participating stations. Stack with a gas card.
Skip rideshare branded gas cards
Generic 5% cash-back cards usually beat the platform-branded ones. Costco Citi if you're a member.
Maintenance is the business
Oil every 5–7.5K, tires rotated every 7.5K. A blown engine ends the business overnight.
The habit that separates the top 20%
Top earners track every shift — gross, miles, tips, time, app, zone — and review weekly. The bottom 80% never look at their own numbers, so they keep making the same low-yield moves. Pick a tracker before your next shift (the tax guide lists the ones that double as mileage logs, which is where the real money hides anyway).
Stack these tactics with the multi-app playbookand you're working the same hours for meaningfully more. And when the ceiling still feels low, that's the signal to look at trucking or courier routes — different game, higher ceilings.
