CDL Jobs With No Experience: What Hires New Drivers and What to Avoid

A new CDL-A with zero miles is more hireable than most people think. The big over-the-road carriers run their own onboarding and take drivers straight out of school because they need seats filled. What you are choosing between is not “job or no job” — it is which first year you want.

Who hires with no experience

Large national carriers with driver-training programs, regional LTL fleets that pair new drivers with a trainer, and dedicated-account fleets that run the same lanes every week. Local box-truck and non-CDL delivery work also hires new drivers and is a real bridge if you are still finishing the license. Listings by type are on the CDL board.

What the first year looks like

Expect weeks over the road with a trainer first, then solo. Pay is per mile in most OTR jobs, so your first-year income depends on miles dispatched, not the headline number in the ad. Ask every recruiter two questions: average weekly miles for first-year drivers, and average home time. If they will not give you numbers, that is the answer.

Paid CDL training

The offer to walk away from

Before you apply

Have your CDL, medical card, and driving record ready; a clean three-year record is what most carriers screen on. Then apply to more than one carrier the same week — recruiters move fast for new drivers, and having two offers is how you get honest numbers from both.
